Moving to linux is not an easy thing, especially for me. The obvious thing is that we can’t use Microsoft applications directly. Then we must get to know the commands on the command line if we want to be smooth in using Linux. In the following, I will tell you my first story using Linux.
Before I tell you my story of moving to Linux, I will tell you my reasons. The reason I moved to Linux was based on a discussion with a Mathematics lecturer in the cafeteria of the Faculty of Mathematics, State University of Malang. At that time we discussed how to create and sell applications. From there he said that in selling homemade applications I had to be careful. If the application I made was based on a pirated application then the results could also be called pirated.
After that discussion I didn’t immediately decide to move to Linux. At first I tried to find out the price of the application. Not only applications, I also found out the price of the OS. I forgot exactly how much the application cost that year. What I remember, the price of the application exceeded the price of the computer. For Microsoft alone, Windows and Office were sold separately. The price was completely out of reach for students at that time.
I finally decided to look for other alternatives, and found linux. But linux is not common, we can’t ask a computer repairman to install linux. They might not even know what linux is. I asked around about linux. I finally met a friend who had a linux CD. The friend was willing to lend me the linux CD and I immediately tried it.
First Time Moving to Linux
I went back to the boarding house and immediately tried to install linux. At that time there were 2 CDs that I borrowed. I hoped that moving to linux would be smooth without any problems, but it was not. The first CD I installed turned out to be ubuntu server. The characteristic of server-specific linux is that it does not use the Desktop Environment (DE) / display. So, the display I got was just a black screen that could be filled with commands.
I then deleted the installed ubuntu and tried to install the second CD. Well, this second CD is quite interesting. It turned out to be KUbuntu. KUbuntu is ubuntu that uses DE KDE Plasma. So it looks like windows.
This is just the beginning of my experience moving to linux. The excitement doesn’t end with the installation. There are many things we have to change. For example, how we install applications, how to install drivers, how to play songs, and the most crucial for me at that time was how to write a thesis. After using Linux, of course I couldn’t use Ms. Office (actually I could use Wine). So everything had to be looked for alternatives.
Well, maybe I’ll end the experience of moving to linux here. The conclusion of the above writing is that I use Linux because I want something legal and of course blessed. As an application developer, I don’t want to have to pirate other people’s applications. Later I will continue in another article about the differences between Windows and Linux.
